Minor Hot Water Heater Issues in Phoenix
Our plumbers are trained to look for the easiest solutions first. We don’t come in and immediately suggest a brand new water heater if an inexpensive repair is the right solution.
In fact, a repair may not be needed at all. There are some minor issues and maintenance checks that could fix the issues you are having.
Here are a few of the problems we’ll be checking for:
- Flipped Breaker – One simple thing you can check for yourself is to go to your fuse box and make sure power is still flowing to the unit. Your breaker may have tripped for any number of reasons. You can usually just flip it back on. Gas-burning water heaters use electricity too and flipping a breaker may be the fix needed.
- Pilot Lights – An extinguished pilot light could also be stopping the water from heating on a gas model. We can check if a relight is necessary. If a pilot light is out and won’t relight it is usually a sign the gas feed has been blocked. Often this a safety precaution that’s been triggered indicating a bigger issue with another part of the water heater.
- A flush – Water heater tanks can definitely use a good flushing every now and then. You may be running out of hot water quickly in the mornings because your tank is filled with sediment and no longer holds as much water. A plumber can come out and drain the water and sediment, making more room for hot water.
- Water Temperature Adjustment – Your water may be warm but not hot enough for your tastes. A thermostat can be turned up to supply hotter water. Some models have a thermostat dial on the outside of the tank. Other units have a thermostat adjustment behind an access panel. If an adjustment doesn’t make for hotter water the thermostat may need replacing.
Bigger Water Heater Issues
Some water heater issues may take more than an outer adjustment. Our experienced plumbers can look inside a unit and determine if a major repair is necessary.
Older units generally have some common issues that don’t take too long to repair. These are a few of the parts and connections we’ll check:
- Electric Water Heater Issues – Water heaters can eventually need new heating elements installed in the tanks. These elements heat up the water inside the reservoir. Our plumbers can check to see if they’re functioning properly and replace them.
- Leaking Water Heater – A leak coming from a water heater can mean a few things. If the tank itself is leaking there’s no real fix that can help. A new water heater is needed. A leak in the pipes feeding the tanks can usually be resealed.
- Gas Water Heater Issues – The valve that regulates the gas going into the unit can stop working. A thermocouple sensor may also start malfunctioning. This sensor monitors the pilot light and lets gas from the gas control valve through when it’s functioning. Replacement parts can be installed.
Water heaters can start to have issues in the 8 to 12-year range. This range can be shorter when a water heater receives heavy use.
