Sometimes when we come out to check out a plumbing backup we discover broken sewer lines. Not all sewer lines break naturally; sometimes they have a helping hand from the utility company.
The utility companies have been using “trenchless boring” (aka horizontal boring) to install new underground utilities. We’re seeing more and more broken sewer lines that they just leave behind for people to find and report. Sometimes the damage done by horizontal boring is minimal and goes undetected but causes big problems later.

Will the utility company pay for the broken sewer line?
Some utilities have contractors come right out and fix it. Others have the homeowner fix it and then send a reimbursement check.
