Appliance failures, such as dishwasher leaks, are a common occurrence everywhere. Here in Phoenix Arizona, where I fix leaky appliances and broken water pipes, I typically run into one of two situations.
1. The sudden leak. A sudden dishwasher leak is usually caused by a broken pipe, or a burst hose. There are supply hoses, which feed the dishwasher hot water, and a hose that carries away the discharged, used water.
2. The slow leak. This is a leak that has been dripping water underneath the dishwasher for some period of time.
Do insurance companies cover water damage from dishwashers?
I am not the homeowner’s insurance expert, but from what customers tell me, the slow ongoing leak is often classified as negligence. Even if you didn’t notice the leak, getting an insurance company to cover a leak that has been going on for quite some time can be difficult. A lot of times, if the leak has been dripping for weeks or even months, the flooring around the dishwasher will need to be replaced. Water damage from a slow leak can become quite extensive and even result in mildew or mold.
Insurance usually covers burst pipes. If the damage is worth filing a claim or not is up to you and the extent of the damage.
Check for leaks occasionally
My best tip is to occasionally take the “kick plate” off of the bottom of the dishwasher and look around with a flashlight for any drips or wet spots.
